The uncertainty of legal fees on divorce – how a fixed fee may be the answer

By: Lorraine Harvey, Principal Lawyer, Family Law

Currently, the vast majority of solicitors charge on a time basis and many people feel that they are unable to afford top end legal services and do not believe they can afford a solicitor. Not only do the media often heavily criticise lawyers for their method of charging, but with the withdrawal of Legal Aid and general client dissatisfaction with the legal profession as a whole in respect of legal fees, lawyers need to adapt and respond to this.

Slater & Gordon have combated this archaic approach and now offer fixed fees across their whole range of family law services. A fixed fee has several attractions, most notably:

  1. Cost certainty – it allows you to plan and budget for the financial commitment of legal fees. Our fixed fees start from £299 (plus VAT and disbursements) and your solicitor will fully outline the fees and costs prior to commencing the work to avoid any last minute surprises.
  2. Service – you get the experience and expertise of Slater & Gordon’s top police family lawyers at a fixed price. Police officers and personnel continue to get a free initial appointment lasting up to an hour to discuss their options in depth with a lawyer from the family law team.
  3. Risk reduction – there are no additional legal costs no matter the length or complexity of your situation.
  4. Focus – the focus of the lawyer is very much on results and outcomes, not how long it takes or how much work is involved.

So, how does a fixed fee work?
Quite simply one of our lawyers will talk through your situation with you during your free initial appointment and advise what work they believe is going to be undertaken and give you a fixed price to do that work.

For example if you and your ex-spouse are in the initial stages of separating and you wish to try and resolve matters such as how divide the marital assets and protect your police pension by way of an agreement, your solicitor will be able to give you a fixed fee for obtaining both parties’ financial disclosure (including the CETV of your pension), negotiating and advising on a settlement which is thereafter drafted into a final order, provided an agreement is reached.
If you are interested in discussing your situation, Lorraine Harvey is the family law representative for Greater Manchester Police Federation. Lorraine is a Principal Lawyer in the family department and has particular expertise in police cases. She is happy to meet in person at Slater & Gordon’s Manchester city centre office, at the Police Federation office or over the telephone. Please contact us to find out the date of the next family law surgery.
